One of the most discouraging aspects of being a self-published author is the act of promoting your work. It’s hard to get the word out there, if you’re not signed with a major publisher. Does this mean you should just give up? NO!!!! This means you work harder, and create as much content as possible. One of the ways you can achieve success, is by building your catalogue.

Have you self-published a book? Great? How about two? Or three? Or five? You can’t stop at just one. Readers need to see what your range is like: do you write under one particular genre, or several? If you are a science fiction writer, that’s fine, but give your readers some options. If you’ve published a series, consider starting a second series, and then a third. Building a catalogue will help establish you as a writer. I currently have 10 titles available, under different genres, so readers can see I’m capable of more than one style of writing. Plus, as a self-published author, I’m not on anyone else’s schedule, and I’m able to maintain creative control of my work. So, I write what I want, when I want, the way I want.

I believe it also helps to release more titles over time. Don’t allow yourself to get stuck on that one book you published four years ago! Keep writing! Set a goal for yourself: release one or two books a year, for example. This will help establish you as a serious writer.
