I’ve been thinking about alternate endings lately. To all my writers and authors out there: think about how one of your stories or books ended. Did you ever consider an alternate ending, while you were writing it? If so, what would it be?
I almost wrote a different ending for one of my series, Fortune’s Wing. (Spoiler alert, if you haven’t read the series) Instead of the peaceful ending, where Fortune decides to save the world, but makes a few changes to it, I considered an ending where he lets the world perish, or develops a God-complex and alters the world to suit his own needs. I also thought about killing Val’s father in the first Valentine book, which would have dramatically changed the course of events for the rest of the series.
I’ve wanted to write one of those “choose your own adventure” stories, where the reader is given a choice between two or more endings, depending on the page they turn to. It’s an interesting concept, and I think it gives the writer a little more freedom. If you had two different endings in mind for your story, this is a great way to explore both of them. You could even conduct a poll online among your readers, just to see which ending they preferred.
