Every book series is filled with a cast of characters. Readers generally choose one as a favorite, and it isn’t always the main characters. The supporting characters bring a lot to the table, and deserve equal admiration. In Nicole Woolaston’s Valentine series, one of my favorites (aside from Valentine herself) is Jo Fuentes. She’s the only character from the series to earn not one but two stand-alone books.

There are many reasons I love Jo as a character, and I think other readers will agree with me.
- She’s a woman of color: Jo is Puerto Rican. She was born and raised in the Bronx in New York.
- She’s a soldier: Prior to working for Kelly McCormick and the Syndicate, Jo becomes a Marine. She proudly serves her country and goes on tour in Iraq.
- She’s a member of the LGBTQ community: this is one of my favorite things about Jo!…
