Releasing a new book is always exciting and special. Something that you have created and worked very hard on, is now available to the rest of the world. One of my books, Our Lady of Righteous Rage, was released in paperback on February 14, 2015, making this the 5th anniversary of its publication. I finally published an ebook of it earlier this year.
Our Lady is a coming-of-age story, set in late 1990’s/early 2000’s New York. The characters are anthropomorphic cats, and the story is told through the use of stream of consciousness: the characters take turns narrating the chapters. Writing this book was somewhat challenging; I found myself incorporating many of my own personal experiences into the story. I worked out a timeline, and kept track of important dates of special events. If I needed to use a particular location or venue, I made sure I had the dates right. If it was a store, I made sure they were still open for business during the time in which that chapter was taking place.
The story’s main character is Amy Edwards: a young cat who lives in Bayside, Queens New York, with her mother, sister and two brothers. Beginning in the Winter of 1994, during Amy’s twelfth birthday, the story follows her and her friends as they work their way through high school into adulthood. They experience graduations, first loves, divorce, and other ups and downs of adulthood. Together, they form a band and a business, and struggle to keep both afloat.
Like my character Amy, I’m a guitarist and a songwriter, so I included song lyrics throughout the story. Many of the concerts Amy and her friends attend, are the very same concerts I went to. Amy’s high school, Benjamin Cardozo, is a combination of the real Benjamin Cardozo High School (because my mother went there) and Bethel High School in VA, where I graduated from.
