It’s the end of January 2023, and we’re coming to the end of the daily posting of chapters from Valentine 2: The Patron Saint on Patreon. WARNING: if you’ve never read The Patron Saint, there are spoilers ahead!

While the first book in the series introduces some of the main characters and Val Entienne’s first challenge (rescuing her father from the clutches of mob boss John Rafferty), The Patron Saint shows us who Val really is. She’s more than just a gun-toting terror. Val cares about the people in her life and is devoted to keeping them safe, including newcomer Victoria. She’s also sensitive; her mother’s unexpected return has an enormous emotional effect on her. She even questions her relationship with her father. Val learns more about herself and her reputation in this arc of the story, and it’s going to set up the events that will occur in the remainder of the series.

Reading about Val’s adventures on the road to California in the first book was entertaining, but if you want to get to know her as a character, The Patron Saint offers more insight. Readers also have an opportunity to learn more about Veronica and who she is as a person: the first book portrays her as sort of a sidekick of Val’s, and just her cousin. The Patron Saint shows us, Val and Veronica are more than cousins, they’re best friends. When Veronica sees Val breaking down emotionally, she immediately steps in to take care of her. She even stands up to Val’s mother on her behalf.
