Hello, fellow readers, writers and creatives! It’s August, and I have finally finished combing through Jane Friedman’s book, The Business of Being A Writer. If you’ve read any of my previous posts you’ re already aware that I like to share information when I come across it, especially when the information pertains to writing and publishing. Friedman’s book is filled with publishing advice, including how to set up your author website and how to select a genre for your book. She weighs the pro’s and con’s of traditional publishing and self-publishing and how to work with literary agents. I have used some of her advice recently, when I updated this site and gave each of my book series their own page, and gave my mother and fellow author her own page. I can’t be one hundred percent sure but I believe this has led to my increase in sales on Amazon and on this site.
Friedman also covers how to earn a living as a writer. Publishing via journals and magazines, and publishing short pieces online are just a few options. She also covers the use of newsletters, blogs and subscriptions in order to gain and maintain readership. If you are a writer who is looking to expand your readership, publish your work through other platforms or if you just need some advice, I recommend The Business of Being A Writer. When I first got started in self-publishing I didn’t think of my writing as “my business”, but I realize now how important the business aspect of what I do has become.
If you’re in the Hampton Virginia area you can find a copy of The Business of Being A Writer at the Hampton Public Library. Keep writing, everyone.
