Kindred  by Octavia Butler

This is a beautiful blend of drama and science fiction. It tackles the themes of race, sexuality and slavery. I was excited when someone told me about this book, because before I read it, I had never known a sci-fi novel written by someone who looked remotely like me. Even if you’re not into sci-fi, this book is a must-read.

Just Kids  by Patti Smith

I read this back when I was a student in art school. Reading about how Patti survived homelessness and people underestimating her gave me some much needed motivation. I’m not sure how many times I’ve read this one, but I’m certain I’ll read it again.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings  by Maya Angelou

This is one of those books who’s description is difficult to put into words. It’s like trying to describe a sunset to a blind person. You just have to experience it for yourself. For me, the best way I can describe it, is that it is a reminder that there is a light at the end of every tunnel, no matter how dark.

The simple illustrations combined with hilarious stories is something I couldn’t pass up or put down! You have to read this! Read all the things!!!!

God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater  by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

I haven’t read a Vonnegut book I didn’t like. This is my favorite satire, second only to Slaughterhouse Five.

The Excorcist by William Peter Blatty

I’m not sure which one scared me more: the book, or the movie. I saw the movie first, then read the book. I was able to imagine certain scenes from the movie as I read, which really scared the sh** out of me. Both are based on true events.

Dark World: Into the Shadows with the Lead Investigator of the Ghost Adventures Crew by Zak Bagans

“Ghost Adventures” is my favorite paranormal reality show, so when Zak Bagans released this book in 2011 I had to grab a copy. In it, he discusses many of his personal experiences in great detail.

The Birds and Other Stories by Daphne du Maurier

One of my favorite movies is Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. I recently discovered the library I work in had a copy of a small collection of short stories by Daphne du Maurier. Her short story, “The Birds”, was the inspiration for the Hitchcock film.
