The Plague by Albert Camus
Okay, I’ll admit: this was never on my ‘must read’ list. I came across it while sanitizing books at the library. Due to the Pandemic, it caught my attention. I’m currently reading it. I’ve read Camus’s The Stranger, so I decided to give this book a try.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
I read this book in a little over an hour, then saw the play on Broadway. Steinbeck became one of my favorite authors after I read The Grapes of Wrath.

Nighty Nightmare by James Howe
James Howe and his Bunnicula series are one of the reasons I became a writer. Animals that talk? Personification at it’s best! This is the fourth book in the series, but it is by far my favorite. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read it.

I fell in love with the film adaptation of this book when I was about six or seven. I didn’t read the book until I was an adult. There are only a few differences between the two, but it’s one of my favorite fantasy books.

Kindred by Octavia Butler
This is a beautiful blend of drama and science fiction. It tackles the themes of race, sexuality and slavery. I was excited when someone told me about this book, because before I read it, I had never known a sci-fi novel written by someone who looked remotely like me. Even if you’re not into sci-fi, this book is a must-read.

Just Kids by Patti Smith
I read this back when I was a student in art school. Reading about how Patti survived homelessness and people underestimating her gave me some much needed motivation. I’m not sure how many times I’ve read this one, but I’m certain I’ll read it again.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
This is one of those books who’s description is difficult to put into words. It’s like trying to describe a sunset to a blind person. You just have to experience it for yourself. For me, the best way I can describe it, is that it is a reminder that there is a light at the end of every tunnel, no matter how dark.

I haven’t read a Vonnegut book I didn’t like. This is my favorite satire, second only to Slaughterhouse Five.
